The principle

Cultural institutions need posters that respect the work they exhibit while establishing their own visual identity. The designer must balance the voice of the institution, the character of the exhibition and the expectations of the audience — usually with a clear, elegant restraint.

Objective. Design for a cultural institution with clarity and restraint.

The brief

Invent a museum and an exhibition, then design its main exhibition poster.

Constraints

  • Invent the institution, exhibition title, dates and artist(s)
  • The museum’s identity must be distinct from the exhibition’s visual
  • Maximum two typefaces

You're done when

  • A clear institutional voice
  • An evocative exhibition visual
  • Elegant information hierarchy

Stretch goal

Design a second poster for a different exhibition at the same museum that clearly belongs to the same system.
