The principle
Emotional design is often reduced to clichés: rain for sadness, sunsets for nostalgia, hearts for love. Clichés are shortcuts that viewers have seen a thousand times. Evoking emotion freshly means finding the specific, personal detail that triggers the feeling — the smell of a particular kitchen, rather than a generic old photograph.
Objective. Evoke an emotion through specific, non-clichéd imagery.
The brief
Design a poster for a reunion event that evokes nostalgia without using vintage photos, sepia tones or film grain.
Constraints
- No sepia, film grain or vintage photographs
- Find a specific, personal detail to anchor the emotion
- Maximum three colours
You're done when
- A clear emotional tone
- No clichéd signifiers
- A specific, resonant detail
Stretch goal
Evoke nostalgia using only colour and type.
