Day 43: Digital Collage
Layer, mask and blend images into a new world.

- 05 Image Making

- Intermediate
- Time
- 60–90 minutes
- Canvas
- 1080 × 1350 px
The principle
Digital collage uses layers, masks and blending modes to combine images in ways that would be impossible by hand. The risk is that everything becomes smooth and seamless. The best digital collage keeps visible edges and deliberate contrasts so the viewer can see how the image was made.
Objective. Combine images digitally while keeping an expressive, constructed quality.
The brief
Create a digital collage poster for a science-fiction book club using at least four images.
Constraints
- Use public domain, licensed or your own images
- At least four source images
- Keep at least some visible edges or seams
- Maximum three typefaces
You're done when
- A cohesive image from multiple sources
- Intentional use of edges and layers
- Properly sourced images
Stretch goal
Use only images from a single public-domain archive, such as a national library collection.
