The principle
Balance is how visual weight is distributed across a composition. Symmetry is the easiest kind of balance, and often the most static. Asymmetrical balance pairs a heavy element with several lighter ones, or a large mass with a small, intense detail. Done well, it feels stable and alive at the same time.
Objective. Achieve asymmetrical balance by weighing elements against each other.
The brief
Design a poster for an architecture walking tour using an asymmetrical composition that feels resolved.
Constraints
- No mirrored or centred layouts
- At least one large and several small elements
- Black, white and one colour
You're done when
- Clearly asymmetrical arrangement
- The composition feels stable
- Visual weight is distributed deliberately
Stretch goal
Make a symmetrical version of the same content and write one sentence about what each version communicates.
