The principle
Contrast is not only visual. Conceptual contrast — light and dark, old and new, loud and quiet — creates tension and meaning. Placing opposites side by side lets each define the other. The design challenge is to show both clearly while keeping the composition unified.
Objective. Visualise a conceptual contrast within one composition.
The brief
Design a poster for a debate night featuring a pair of opposites of your choice.
Examples: Analogue vs Digital, City vs Country, Work vs Rest. Pick your own.
Constraints
- Both opposites must be equally represented
- The composition must still feel unified
- Maximum three colours
You're done when
- Both ideas clearly communicated
- A unified composition
- Tension that creates interest
Stretch goal
Make the poster read as one idea right-side up and the opposite upside down.
