The principle

When type sits behind part of an image and in front of another, the two become one composition. It creates depth and integration — the type no longer sits on top of the image like a caption but becomes part of the scene. This technique is common in magazine covers and film posters.

Objective. Integrate typography and imagery through layering.

The brief

Design a poster for a portrait photography exhibition where the title weaves behind and in front of the subject.

Constraints

  • Type must pass behind at least one part of the image and in front of another
  • The title must remain readable
  • One photograph only
  • Maximum two typefaces

You're done when

  • Convincing depth between type and image
  • A readable title
  • A cohesive, magazine-quality result

Stretch goal

Do it with an analogue process: print the photo, cut it, and layer real paper type.
