The principle
Rhythm in design comes from the intervals between elements — their spacing, size and timing. Regular rhythm is like a metronome; varied rhythm is like a melody. Changing the intervals can make a composition speed up, slow down, pause and start again.
Objective. Create visual rhythm through varied spacing and scale.
The brief
Design a poster for a percussion concert where the arrangement of elements suggests a beat.
Constraints
- Use repeated elements with deliberately varied intervals
- At least one visible pause
- Typography and simple shapes only
- Maximum three colours
You're done when
- A sense of rhythm and movement
- Varied, deliberate intervals
- Clear relationship to the music
Stretch goal
Transcribe an actual rhythm (a drum pattern or song) into the spacing of your elements.
