The principle
When letters are cropped by the edges of a poster, they become shapes as much as words. The viewer completes them, which creates energy and engagement. The skill is knowing how much you can crop before meaning is lost — and when losing it is the point.
Objective. Explore the boundary between legible type and abstract shape.
The brief
Design a type-only poster for an exhibition of contemporary sculpture where the title bleeds off at least two edges.
Constraints
- Title must bleed off at least two edges
- The title must still be decipherable
- Typography only
- Maximum two colours
You're done when
- Bold cropping at the edges
- Title remains recognisable
- Secondary information is clear and well placed
Stretch goal
Crop the type so heavily that only the counters and negative spaces carry the word.
