The principle
Reduction is the practice of removing everything that is not essential. It is harder than adding, because every element you remove forces the rest to work harder. The aim is not minimalism as a style, but clarity: the poster should say what it needs to and nothing else.
Objective. Practise editing by reducing a design to its essential elements.
The brief
Design a poster for a film screening in a park. Then make a second version with at least half of the elements removed.
Constraints
- Version one: anything goes
- Version two: at least 50% fewer elements
- The reduced version must still communicate the event
You're done when
- Two clearly different versions
- The reduced version is still clear and complete
- Every remaining element has a reason to exist
Stretch goal
Make a third version with only one element and the date. Can it still work?
